Other Names: Agathosma betulina (Berg.), Diosma betulina, bucco, bookoo, bucku, round buchu, short buchu.

Native to the Cape region of South Africa, Buchu has been used in Europe since the 16th century not only for urinary and prostate problems, but for gout and rheumatism as well. It is still popular in South Africa. Buchu is a 6- to 9-foot bush with white and pink flowers. The leaves, which are the medicinal part, have a peppermint aroma. They are used as a flavoring agent in tea mixtures.

Uses: Diuretic, urinary antiseptic. Buch is useful for the treatment of:
Premenstrual Syndrome: Buchu releives the bloating associated with PMS. High Blood Pressure and Congenital Heart Failure: Consult your physician before using any herb for these conditions as these are life threatening cases. Urinary Tract Infection: No proof exists for its effectiveness; but people continue to use it for infection. Buchu may be used in any infection of the genito-urinary system, such as cystitis, urethritis and prostatitis. Its healing and soothing properties indicate its use together with other relevant remedies in many conditions of this system, especially useful where dysuria is part of the symptom picture. Lemon Balm's medicinal properties have been held in high regard for nearly two millennia. The Roman scholar Pliny believed Lemon Balm could prevent infection in open wounds (an action that has been clinically proven for balsamic oils in general). The noted 16th century physician Paracelsus believed Lemon Balm could heal even patients close to death.

A perennial herb, Lemon Balm grows up to 3 feet in height. It is native to the east Mediterranean region and west Asia, but is cultivated throughout central Europe. Before flowering, it has a lemon-like taste and smell; and the fresh leaves, in addition to their medicinal applications, are commonly used in cooking.
